People travel through many states of mind throughout any given day. We may feel tired when we wake up, refreshed after a shower, energized after our morning coffee, and bored during a company meeting.
Most people go through life letting the situations they find themselves in unknowingly manipulate their state of mind. “The boss did this to me,” “The traffic made me feel this way,” or “If only I had fill in the blank, I’d feel fill in the blank.” But here’s the interesting thing, we don’t experience things as they are, we experience them as we are.
For example, have you ever been in such a good mood that almost nothing could bring you down? Everybody’s had at least one experience like that. Your state of mind was so confidently happy that it would take a major disaster to change your mood.
Well, what if you could feel whatever you want just about whenever you want? When you know how to master your emotions and run your own brain, YOU CAN. And when you learn how to help other people master their emotions and mental states, you’ll be able to get them to feel whatever they want whenever they want.
We influence our states by the pictures in our imagination and the way that we talk to ourselves. These inner experiences are our internal representations of reality.
Let’s do an experiment. Please… really do this exercise. Stop for a moment and think of a time when you felt really, really good… See what you saw in vivid detail and hear what you heard. Now make the colors richer and brighter, the sounds louder… Now make the pictures bigger and the sounds even louder and notice what that does to your feelings.
Powerful pictures create a powerful effect on us.
And any time you want to change your state, do the above exercise. Perhaps you already see how you could apply this technique with another person.
Let’s get back to the subject, what is a buying state of mind? Let’s see. How about intense excitement, overwhelming desire, extreme motivation, or complete surrender. Can you think of more? I bet you can.
And I bet you can think back to times when you experienced each of those states. Let’s take intense excitement. Can you think back to a time when you felt this way? Think back to the circumstances and see them in vivid detail. Hear what you heard and feel what you felt. Double that feeling. Perhaps you can feel that same intense excitement about lots of people giving you extremely large sums of money. See someone handing you a large briefcase filled with cash and feel the excitement as you picture all of the things you will do. Hear the sounds of the champagne corks popping and the party noises getting louder and more intense. How do you feel knowing that you are rich beyond belief? Now double that feeling.
This is fun stuff, isn’t it? Now let’s take a look at what’s happening behind the scenes…
