Thanks for the link on this one. I’ve been on a NIN binge for the last month or so. I’m completely amazed at how NIN can take so much distortion and make it sound so well in the mix along side “real” and organic sounds. The slightly out of tune sounding upright piano has become a mainstay to their sound.
As for the article, I enjoyed how Trent is a realist in that he see’s what doesn’t work, doesn’t hide it, and learns from it. He knows what the world would “rather” do (ie, torrent everything) and he accepts it is the reality of the day and works “through” it to make it effective for NIN. Brilliant. Amazingly low key’d 🙂

I know what you mean. So much care with the sound. I’m pretty sure the piano is an altered tuning of some sort. Would love to know which one.
