Define: Microtones

Division of the octave into intervals smaller than the half-tone, the smallest interval used within the tempered scale. Examples include Fokker’s thirty-one-note organ, Partch’s forty-three-note percussion instruments, etc. Microtonal music, compositions based on microtones.

Don Alias, 66, Percussionist and Sideman, Is Dead

From Jazz HQ:
Don Alias, a percussionist who had a long career as a sought-after sideman, working with an illustrious array of artists in jazz and pop including Nina Simone, Miles Davis and Joni Mitchell, died on March 28 at his home in Manhattan. He was 66.

We’ve lost two too many jazz legends this week.

Song Composed Entirely of 37 Cello Parts. See the Video.

This is a pretty amazing video of Ethan Winer playing 37 separate cello parts to create one song. He even plays the percussion parts on his cello. It was recorded on 23 tracks using 37 plug-in effects. He spent hundreds of hours on this project so its worth a listen.
