Logic Pro 8 Released!

LogicProLogic Studio was released on Wednesday and it was in my hands by noon. Unfortunately, due to my owning the academic version of Logic Pro 7, I had to wait until Friday to find a tricky hack to install the upgrade. There’s no upgrade for academic versions. I think it’s a stupid rule. I figure it should be like getting an educational discount on computers. Apple doesn’t see it that way. It’s probably the first time I’ve ever been mad at Apple.

But now that Logic Pro is installed in my system, all I can say is “Wow!” Logic Pro got a boob job. The user interface has been completely overhauled. That was my biggest complaint with Logic Pro 7. It wasn’t as fun to use as GarageBand. It didn’t have that Apple sexiness. Now it does.

Logic Studio is a set of apps including Logic Pro 8, MainStage (a live performance app), Soundtrack Pro, and all of the GarageBand Jam Packs. It’s a serious suite of sound tools. I haven’t even launched MainStage yet. And it’s an app I’ve been waiting for them to develop for a long time!

So you know what I’ll be up to for the next few weeks.

For a quick look at just one of the many sexy improvements, watch my Logic Pro 8 Template Chooser video. This will be part of a video training program I’m helping to develop at Logic Studio Training.

To talk well and eloquently is a very great art, but that an equally great one is to know the right moment to stop.

Logic Pro 8 Released As Part Of The New Logic Studio

Logic Pro 8Apple’s Logic Studio was released this past Wednesday. I had a copy in my hands by noon.

It’s a major upgrade. Logic Studio is a full suite of apps including Logic Pro 8, MainStage, Soundtrack Pro 2, Studio instruments and effects, and the entire GarageBand Jam Pack library. Almost 40 gigs of content!

The user interface of Logic Pro has been completely redesigned. Its new single-window workspace fits the streamlined design of Apple’s other applications. If you’re a GarageBand user, the upgrade will be much easier to manipulate.

MainStage is built for live performance. Keyboardists and guitarists alike will be able to perform with confidence even in the most demanding conditions. It’s a major step to bringing your software instruments and effects to the stage with an interface that gives you just enough information to get the job done.

My major complaint with Logic Pro 7 was the user interface. It wasn’t nearly as fun or easy to use as GarageBand. All of that has changed. I love the new and sexier Apple-centric design.

Watch my introduction to the new Logic Pro 8 template chooser.

GarageBand Changing The Face Of Music Creation

GarageBand is bringing music to the masses in a way that is very easy… You feel that you are in a creative mode right away. There are always people that want higher-quality recording, but the basic fundamentals need to be delivered in a simple package and that’s what GarageBand does.

Some good conversation about GarageBand over at digg.

The software itself is really good. If you’re already using Logic Pro, Protools or something similar, then there’s no need to switch. But I look at it more like opening a text editor instead of MS Word. It opens faster, I can capture my ideas faster, and should I want to expand my production, I can import my work into Logic Pro.

But the real impact of GarageBand is cultural. Anyone can begin expressing themselves through audio and if you have some talent, people might even listen to you. That is too cool. .
