My Lord, I always thought that I was alone in this. My best friend is a lead guitarist in another state, that only plays covers, and he’s happy with that, and doesn’t do anything like this. I just quit playing live, and this technique (I call it stream of consciousness playing), is 99% of what I play. I sit down with my guitar or keyboard and just play new chords – well new to me anyway – I’m sure they probably have names, but I don’t know the or care to. I’m not even recording them and they’re extremely ephemeral. The voicing of these new sounds aren’t even remembered because the next time I use my instruments I find another new path of creative serendipity to play and hear. I’m going to get these down in logic and play with them, as soon as I get my house in (order) – remodeling is a bitch.
